Was excited about the idea of painting my kitchen cabinets one day and then I saw this…it’s only on one door that I’ve found but…no idea what’s going on here. Is it plastic?!? Does this mean I can’t paint them? I don’t even know what to search on this or how to fix this one that’s apparently bad. I couldn’t even tell with the others
Yeah. It’s particle board covered in plastic.
You should be able to peel and paint. But if it’s in your budget, get new doors.
if you can afford it buy new cabinet doors made out of real wood instead of that garbage.
It’ll look like shit if you peel and paint, the boards are typically treated and you’ll get a weird texture on the surface of the wood
looks like melamine is peeling off..replace the doors with real wood..they take paint better
Join one a couple of the popular cabinet painting groups on FB – there’s at least one group that has pros who offer advice/guidance to DIYers. I’ve seen this ‘thermofoil’ type door discussed.
I peeled them off in the kitchen from our first condo then I used a cabinet kit. It held up for years and helped with resell. You can not paint traditional way. In the kits, I think it was rustolium, it had a good base that filled the board to give a smoother surface.
You could try to use drywall mud on the particle board and sand it down smooth then paint- it would be easier to get new doors
Laminated cabinets, we have the same here im SA. Lightly sand, prime then paint.
Sand the bulge down and cover wood with epoxy Lightly sand it to smooth it out and then it’s ready to paint
Is thermofoil the same at laminate? When I looked for cabinets the thermofoil ones were among the more expensive options.
We peeled ours and painted. We plan on one day redoing the kitchen, but wanted to make things look better until then (pretty much all doors were peeling)
